Phoenix Suns to hire former Bucks head coach Mike Budenholzer

The Phoenix Suns plan to hire former Milwaukee Bucks head coach Mike Budenholzer, according to a report from The Athletic. Shams Charania, an NBA insider with The Athletic, tweeted Friday night that Budenholzer agreed to a five-year contract worth more than $50 million. “Suns land two-time NBA Coach of the Year and Arizona native,” Charania wrote. The Suns fired head coach Frank Vogel on Thursday after sweeping the first round of the playoffs. Vogel was head coach for only one season. Budenholzer’s new contract is expected to reach nearly eight figures per year, according to The Athletic. Budenholzer was the head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks from 2018 to 2023, and led the team to an NBA championship in 2021. The Bucks defeated the Phoenix Suns in six games. Budenholzer also led the Bucks to a division title during each of his five years with the team. Following the 2021 NBA Championship, the Bucks signed Budenholzer to a multi-year extension. However, the team fired Budenholzer in 2023 after losing in five games in the first round of the playoffs to the Miami Heat. The Bucks have since hired two head coaches, Adrian Griffin, who was fired after 43 games, and Doc Rivers.
