Game report: Luis Muriel scores first MLS double as Lions defeat Philadelphia Union

CHESTER, Pa. (May 11, 2024) – Orlando City SC (3-5-3, 12 points) won a 3-2 thriller over the Philadelphia Union (3-3-5, 14 points) on Saturday night at Subaru Park. The Lions were backed by a brace and an assist from designated player Luis Muriel, which served as his first goals and assist of the 2024 campaign.

Midfielder Nico Lodeiro assisted on all three of the Lions’ goals that night, marking the third time in Club history that a player tallied three assists.

Striker Duncan McGuire scored his sixth goal in all competitions in the 2024 campaign, helping City get on the scoreboard to level the match. Muriel scored the first of his two goals the night before half-time with a great left-footed goal.

Just seconds into the second half, Muriel found her second goal of the night which served as the winning goal for the Lions. The double counts as the second double scored by a Lions player this season, the first being by McGuire against Minnesota United FC.

Union had a chance to tie the game in second-half stoppage time, but Pedro Gallese stopped Daniel Gazdag’s attempt, securing their 50th victory between the sticks in regular season history.

The Lions will return home to INTER&Co Stadium to host Inter Miami CF this Wednesday, May 15 at 7:30 pm ET.
